Paul Karpowich |
In his final regular season weekend at Cheel, Karpowich had the tough task of keeping 2nd-place Cornell and 3rd-place Colgate at bay. The Golden Knights needed a great weekend to inch closer to a first round playoff bye, and would need Karpowich to lead the way. Luckily for them, he did. On Friday night, he allowed only one goal and made 27 saves against the Big Red in a 1-1 tie. The following evening, he once again allowed only one goal while making 28 saves agains the Radiers in a 2-1 victory on senior night. Chris Wagner scored Colgate's only goal with just two seconds left in regulation. Karpowich also kept Austin Smith pointless for just the fourth time this season (Update: Smith was awarded an assist on Wagner's goal a few days later). His 2.31 GAA is fourth in the league, and .925 save percentage is second in the league. Thanks to Karpowich's big weekend, Clarkson now sits in fourth place, controlling their own destiny for a first round bye.
Second Star: Kenny Agostino (Yale)
The Bulldog offense exploded for 12 goals this weekend, and the stud sophomore played a big role in it. On Friday, he netted Yale's first goal in a 5-3 win over Dartmouth. The Pittsburgh Penguins draft pick had a huge night on Saturday, with a two goal and two assist performance in Yale's 7-1 demolition of Harvard. Agostino picked up a goal and assist in the first period, assisting on the Bulldogs second goal and scoring his own goal for Yale's third tally to go up 3-0 in the first frame. He scored a power-play goal midway through the second period, and then assisted on Anthony Day's power-play tally with 16 assists remaining in the regulation. The Flanders, New Jersey native has been on a tear of late, accumulating 13 points (7g,6a) in his last eight games. Agostino is third on the Bulldogs roster with 15 assists and 28 points, and is second with 13 goals.
Third Star: Brian O'Neill (Yale)
Like Agostino, O'Neill had a big part in Yale's offensive outburst this weekend. In the first game of the weekend, he tallied a goal and assist against Big Green. He scored Yale's second goal 7:45 into the middle frame. Then he assisted on Jesse Root's go-ahead power-play goal early in the third period, before helping seal the deal with an assist on Kevin Peel's power-play empty net goal late in regulation. The following night, the Yardley, Pennsylvania assisted on three Yale goals in the win over the Crimson. He picked up two assists in the first period on Antoine Laganiere and Andrew Miller's goals, and then assisted on Agostino's PP goal in the second period. O'Neill has also been on a hot streak of late, tallying a point in his past eight games, accumulating 14 points over that span. The senior also leads the team with 18 goals and 36 points, and is tied for the nation lead with 10 power-play goals.
