ECAC Hockey Video of the Week: Union College Hockey Talks Twitter

This is a great video made by the great Julie Robenhymer from Hockey Buzz. She's been recently traveling the college hockey world talking to players about different topics, and has done a great job. You can follow her on Twitter at @JulieRobenhymer.

In this video, Julie talks to the Dutchmen about Twitter. They have some very interesting and funny responses. Plus, they give the blog a great shout out. It's cool to see some ECAC players get involved with social media in a fun and positive way... and that they read this site too!

Enjoy!

Three Stars (Week 4)

Joakim Ryan
First Star: Joakim Ryan (Cornell)
In his first career NCAA game, Ryan netted two goals and added an assist in the Big Red's 5-4 loss to Mercyhurst. And he did all of this... as a defenseman! Hopefully this is a sign of good things to come for Cornell, and for me too, since he's on my fantasy team. Unfortunately, I did not start him, but I will next week. Last year for the Dubuque Fighting Saints (USHL), he scored three goals in 53 games. You think he'll eclipse that mark?

Austin Smith
Second Star: Austin Smith (Colgate)
Smith has been on a tear to start the season, accumulating 11 points (7g, 4a) in his first seven games. He kept it up this weekend at Niagara with two goals and two assists on the weekend. His big game was on Friday in the Raiders' wild 7-6 overtime victory over the Purple Eagles. He potted a power-play goal early in the second, and scored the game-winner in overtime. Smith added an assist on defenseman Thomas Larkin's power-play goal, and did so again on Saturday night.

Three Star: Jeff Malcolm (Yale)
The junior tendy only saw action in two games last season, but started both games this weekend for the Bulldogs at the Ivy Shootout. He made the most of his early opportunity by leading Yale to a win and a tie. On Friday, he allowed two goals and made 26 saves in a 2-2 with Princeton, and followed that up with a 29 save performance in a 2-1 win over Dartmouth. His current save percentage and goals against average are .948 and 1.44, respectively.
Jeff Malcolm

Honorable Mention:
Princeton's Michael Sdao (2 goals)
Brown's Garnet Hathaway (1 goal, 2 assists)
Brown's Michael Clemente (4 goals against, 58 saves, 1-1-0)
Dartmouth's James Mello (3 goals against, 47 saves, 1-1-0)
Colgate's Austin Mayer (2 goals)
Clarkson's Paul Karpowich (4 goals against, 62 saves, 1-0-1)

ECAC Hockey Video of the Week: Allen York's Blooper

In honor of former RPI goaltender Allen York being called up to The Show this weekend, I thought I'd show a blooper of him. This clip is from February 2009 in game at the Houston Field House between the Engineers and Clarkson.

York's mistake ended up causing the eventual game-winning goal in a 4-2 loss to the Golden Knights.

This video also features a blooper from the beneficiary of York's mistake, Nick Tremblay, who was named my Second Star this week. See what he does during his celly.

Also, you got to love the black and pink sweaters RPI is wearing for Pink at the Rink. I don't remember the ECAC doing anything like that over the past few years. If not, they should bring it back. I wear my Pink at the Rink bracelet everyday.

Three Stars (Week 3)

Allan McPherson
I will not be counting the Ivy League players this week since they played in exhibition games. So, I am only counting players from Clarkson, Union, Quinnipiac,

First Star: Allan McPherson (Clarkson)
McPherson had a goal and an assist in both games this weekend against the Yellow Jackets, for four points total. He scored Clarkson's first goal of the game in both games.

Second Star: Nick Tremblay (Clarkson)
Tremblay tallied two goals and two assists in the Golden Knights' sweep over AIC. Both of his goals came in the third period.

Nick Tremblay
Third Star: Jeremy Langlois (Quinnipiac)
Over three games this week, Langlois continued his hot start with two goals and three assists. He has tallied a point in all eight games this season, and is currently tied for first in the nation in scoring with 14 points (8g, 6a).

Honorable Mention:
Kelly Zajac (Union)
The senior center accumulated three points on the weekend (2g, 1a).

Jeremy Welsh (Union)
Welsh also had two goals (both on the PP) and an assist on the weekend for the Dutchmen.

Jeremy Langlois
Troy Grosenick (Union)
In his only game of the weekend, the sophomore netminder posted his first career shutout in Union's 5-0 win at RIT.

Paul Karpowich (Clarkson)
The Golden Knights goaltender made 57 saves on the weekend, including a shutout on Saturday night.

Matthew Peca (Quinnipiac)
The freshman forward scored a goal in all three games this week, and added an assist against Bentley on Tuesday. He is currently riding a 7-game scoring streak.

Sunday Scoreboard (Week 4)

Storylines:
- You cannot underestimate Atlantic Hockey teams, especially on the road. Just ask Quinnipiac, Union, and Colgate.
- Clarkson is off to a nice start. They have won four straight games at home against Atlantic Hockey foes by the combined score of 16-4. Even though beating Sacred Heart and AIC is not impressive, you still have to give the Golden Knights credit for beating teams they're supposed to beat. Let's see if they can keep it going on the road next week at Bentley.
- RPI finally got on the scoreboard this weekend with two goals at Notre Dame thanks to Joel Malchuk and Johnny Rogic, but lost to the Irish.
-The Ivies dominated in their exhibition games against Canadian college teams. The only loss was by Yale to Waterloo. It looks like they ran into a good goaltender. Personally, I don't think this loss really matters at all.
- Union's power-play is continuing their dominance from last season. This weekend they went 5-for-12 on the man advantage, which is good for 41.6%. They are currently #2 in the nation with a 34.78% conversion rate.
Clarkson's Paul Karpowich made 57 saves this weekend

ECAC Hockey Video of the Week: The Willie Mitchell Goal

Willie Mitchell
Willie Mitchell only played two years at Clarkson before starting his pro career in the New Jersey Devils system, but those two years were extremely memorable. In his freshman year, Mitchell tallied 26 points in 34 games, which led to him being named to the ECAC All-Rookie and Second Teams, as well as being tabbed as the ECAC's co-Rookie of the Year with teammate Erik Cole.

The following season he accumulated 29 points on his way to being named to the ECAC First Team and a Second Team All-American.

The most memorable moment of his college career and one of the most memorable moments in the history of Clarkson Hockey came in the 1999 ECAC semifinals. In this game the Golden Knights faced Princeton in a classic battle. Clarkson went ahead with four first period goals, but the Tigers responded with three in the second period. The Golden Knights went up 5-3, eight minutes into the third, but Princeton stormed back to cut the lead to one with 4:17 left in regulation. Then with 43 seconds left Princeton's Scott Bertoli tied the game with a dramatic goal. [Click Here for Game Box Score]

Princeton seemed to have all the momentum heading into the overtime period, but Willie Mitchell had something to say about that. What he did in the following video led to him being named the ECAC Tournament MVP.

Mitchell and the Golden Knights went on to win the ECAC championship with a 3-2 win over St. Lawrence, avenging their 5-4 double OT loss in the championship game to Princeton the previous season.

He has played for the Devils, Minnesota Wild, Dallas Stars, Vancouver Canucks, and Los Angeles Kings over his pro career where he has been a very solid defenseman. [Click Here for Career Stats]

Three Stars (Week 2)

Jeremy Langlois
Here are my Three Stars of the Week:

First Star: Jeremy Langlois - Quinnipiac
In three games against Atlantic Hockey teams, Langlois absolutely dominated the competition. He tallied an assist against Holy Cross on Wednesday, netted a hat trick and added an assist on Saturday at home against Canisius, and scored another power-play goal on Sunday against the Golden Griffins. So, if you're keeping track at home, that's four goals and two assists in three games. His six goals are the most in the country, and his nine points are tied for tops in all of college hockey.

Second Star: Louke Oakley - Clarkson
Louke Oakley
The Golden Knights swept Sacred Heart this weekend where they scored a combined eight goals.... Oakley scored half of them, scoring twice in both contests, half of which came on the power-play. The senior forward is off to a scorching start the 11-12 season. He scored three goals in each of his first three seasons for nine career goals. He eclipsed his season-high in goals this weekend, and has five on the season. The way he's going it could be safe to say that he will score more than nine goals on the year.

Third Star: Kyle Flanagan - St. Lawrence
Kyle Flanagan
The Saints had a pretty terrible time on the road this week, first getting shellacked against Michigan, and then losing in OT at RIT, but Flanagan had two great offensive performances. On Thursday, he scored two of SLU's three goals (both on the power-play), and followed that up with another two goal performance in a 6-5 OT loss in Rochester. He added another power-play goal in that game, along with a shorthanded tally. His eight points on the season is currently tied for third most in the nation.

Even though these three guys are my "Three Stars" I still want to make a shout out to the Colgate Raiders, who I think really made a statement this weekend with a split with #4/#5 Miami. My "Three Stars" is based off of individual performances, but that doesn't mean any of the Raiders didn't have great weekends. Austin Smith scored a goal in each contest (giving him a goal in three straight games), Chris Wagner had a goal and two assists on the weekend, and goaltender Eric Mihalik made a combined 31 saves. We'll see if they can keep up their stellar play heading into their upcoming games with Atlantic Hockey teams before the league games begin.

Sunday Scoreboard (Week 2)

Storylines from this weekend's games in ECAC Hockey:
- St. Lawrence is having a tough time keeping the puck out of the net. Maybe the loss of Joe Marsh has something to do with that?
- Sacred Heart is pretty terrible or Clarkson is not as bad as some people expected.
- Colgate might really be a force to be reckoned with after playing really tough and splitting with highly ranked Miami. They have definitely been the team of the ECAC so far.
- Union and Western Michigan are very equally matched, which makes sense since they were ranked 11th and 12th, respectively, coming into this weekend.
- RPI is having a tough time scoring. They were shutout in both games this weekend, and haven't scored a goal in four of their past five games.
- Quinnipiac has a pretty good offense. They scored 16 goals in three games this week against Atlantic Hockey competition.
